The challenge:
To construct a new stadium and pitch for St Helen’s Rugby League Club.
The solution:
Tarmac Topsport supplied 1,200 tonnes of gravel, 2000 tonnes of sand, 1,200 tonnes of rootzone and 2,000 tonnes of loksand for the construction of St Helen’s Rugby Clubs new pitch.
In addition to the product, the Topsport team also supplied invaluable technical advice and support – for example, confirming the allowable bridging factors between gravel & sand and sand & rootzone to ensure compatibility and also advising on the percentage ratio of the loksand mix. The contractor was able to pass on the specifications of the consultants directly to the Topsport team, confident in the knowledge they would be met.
In a project this size, deliveries must be tightly scheduled to ensure no time is lost. Tarmac’s Topsport team maintained daily contact with the contractor to confirm delivery times and quantities were in line with the daily demands of the project. If ever a single delivery fell slightly short, quantities were made up in the following day’s delivery.
When grass cover thins or has been lost, stability can be affected. Thanks to the technical advice of the Topsport team, this was avoided by maintaining a moist rootzone condition, achieved by the inclusion of fibre into the upper rootzone area.
The benefits:
The project ran smoothly and was completed on schedule. The new, stable pitch surface is designed to cope with well over 25mm of rainfall per hour, which ensure that fewer games will need to be cancelled in future due to inclement weather.
